You’re All Set If You Know This

  • All students who plan to attend Convocation are required to wear academic attire to Convocation.
  • Masters students buy academic attire from the CU Bookstore
  • Masters students wear a CU blue Masters robe and CU blue mortarboard
  • Doctoral students rent academic attire from the CU Bookstore
  • Doctoral students wear a CU blue Doctoral robe, hood, and black velvet tam

  • Academic Attire is available at the CU Bookstore at the beginning of March 12 2019. 
  • Masters graduates can purchase academic attire in-store up to the day of commencement. 
  • Doctoral graduates last day to place orders without incurring a late fee is April 19th.

CU Grad Fair

  • Morningside Campus:
    • Tuesday, March 12 – Thursday, March 14: 11:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
  • Medical Center Campus:
    • Friday, March 15: 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. 
  • Vendors will be available to help students, faculty and staff with gowns, frames, rings, announcements and jewelry. These items are still available after Grad Fair.
  • During Grad Fair, enjoy these special promotions:
    • Purchase a diploma frame and receive 15% off all gift (non-apparel) items
    • Be entered to have two choices to win a $100 Barnes & Noble Gift Card o 25% off all Class of 2019 merchandise, no other purchase necessary

  • Doctoral attire can be rented at the CU Bookstore in Lerner Hall and costs: $185

Pro Tips

  • Iron your attire before Convocation.
  • For Masters students, tassels go on the right side of your cap before you graduate.
  • Per University tradition, Masters candidates at Columbia University do not receive hoods.

Is There an Alternative?

The Office of Student Affairs has a limited supply of academic attire that will be made available to graduating students via a rental lottery during the spring semester. 

The Lottery Program Timeline:

  • 4/9/19 Academic Attire Lottery Opens
  • 4/25/19 Academic Attire Lottery Closes
  • 4/26/19 Results Announced

To access the lottery:

If you're trying to access the lottery form on a tablet or mobile phone you may encounter difficulty as you need to be logged into your myTC portal. If you have not logged into the portal, through a browser, to your gmail account you will encounter difficulty and receive a message that you need permission.  You do not permission, you just need to be recently logged into your account.  Additionally, if you have another gmail account (personal) open, it will likely cause interference with the operating systems.  It is advised that you either log-out of the alternate account, or open an incognito window (Google Chrome) to complete your entry.  Should you have continued difficulty, please contact


  • OSA only carries MASTERS gowns. They do not carry inventory for doctoral candidates.
  • Gown recipients will be chosen via random lottery. Students must sign-up for the Academic Attire Lottery by completing the form by/before the deadline to be included in the drawing. Results of lottery drawing will be emailed to all entries.
  • Limit ONE entry per TC student. Multiple entries will be determined ineligible for drawing.
  • One entry is applicable toward an academic attire package. The academic attire package includes a gown, cap and standard tassel.
  • Upon pickup, a signed Rental Agreement & $60.00 (cash only) is required (Note: $10.00 is a non-refundable dry-cleaning fee; $50.00 is a refundable deposit, which will be returned to recipient once all attire is returned in the condition it was given.
  • We cannot guarantee size options. However, we will do our best to accommodate your request!
